چکیده
Nanotubes, nanowires and nanobelts are important one-dimensional (1D) nanomaterials that are the foundation for nanoscience and nanotechnology (Fig. 1a). 1D nanomaterials have important applications in electronics, optoelectronics, sensors, biomedical science, environmental science, green energy and advanced defence technologies. This themed issue on inorganic 1D nanomaterials gathers papers about the synthesis, characterization and novel applications of 1D nanomaterials, which gives a broad overview about the on-going cutting-edge research in the forefront of the field. Among the 1D nanomaterials being studied, carbon nanotubes, silicon nanowires and zinc oxide nanowires/nanobelts are the dominant materials systems (Fig. 1). Among the 27 papers published in this issue, we have 7 feature articles that

Inorganic nanotubes: a novel platform for nanofluidics.
Templating approaches are being developed for the synthesis of inorganic nanotubes, a novel platform for nanofluidics. Single crystalline semiconductor GaN nanotubes have been synthesized using an epitaxial casting method. The partial thermal oxidation of silicon nanowires leads to the synthesis of silica nanotubes. The dimension of these nanotubes can be precisely controlled during the templat...
متن کاملSynthesis of inorganic nanomaterials.
Synthesis forms a vital aspect of the science of nanomaterials. In this context, chemical methods have proved to be more effective and versatile than physical methods and have therefore, been employed widely to synthesize a variety of nanomaterials, including zero-dimensional nanocrystals, one-dimensional nanowires and nanotubes as well as two-dimensional nanofilms and nanowalls. Chemical synth...
متن کاملBend, buckle, and fold: mechanical engineering with nanomembranes.
Research on nanomembranes and graphene sheets represents the "third wave" of work on nanomaterials, following earlier studies of nanoparticles/fullerenes and, somewhat later, nanowires/nanotubes. Inorganic semiconductor nanomembranes are particularly appealing due to their materials diversity, the ease with which they can be grown with high quality over large areas, and the ability to exploit t...
متن کاملThe 2008 Kavli Prize in Nanoscience: carbon nanotubes.
The 2008 Kavli Prize in Nanoscience was awarded to Dr. Sumio Iijima for his contributions in the field of carbon nanotubes. Carbon nanotubes are molecular-scale wires with well-defined and atomically smooth surfaces that exhibit remarkable properties. Great progress has been made in the field of 1-D nanostructures, including carbon nanotubes and inorganic nanowires, in terms of synthesis, chara...
متن کاملLarge-scale integration of semiconductor nanowires for high-performance flexible electronics.
High-performance flexible electronics has attracted much attention in recent years due to potential applications in flexible displays, artificial skin, radio frequency identification, sensor tapes, etc. Various materials such as organic and inorganic semiconductor nanowires, carbon nanotubes, graphene, etc. have been explored as the active semiconductor components for flexible devices. Among th...
